Project profile

Decentralized hydrogen upgrading of biogas through steam reforming

Under the label "BioH2Ref", a BtX pilot plant for the production of hydrogen from biogas has been in operation since 2022.

Biogas plants are currently being phased out of the EEG feed-in tariff and are looking for economical connection concepts. Germany needs sector coupling and has identified hydrogen as the raw material that will enable a sustainable energy transition. In contrast to the electrolysis pathway, the usable energy is not reduced by hydrogen processing, as biogas and not electricity is used as the primary energy source. Green hydrogen from biogas is therefore the ideal raw material for building a hydrogen infrastructure as long as renewable electricity is not available in abundance.

On the technical side, the project investigates the influence of the raw biogas quality on the hydrogen quality, the real achievable efficiencies of the process, the waste heat integration of the hydrogen upgrading into the overall plant, as well as the constructive and procedural optimizations of the raw biogas upgrading and reformer dimensioning.

A holistic analysis of GHG emissions was also carried out. Furthermore, the economic efficiency of the overall concept was evaluated and recommendations for the further dissemination of the technology were developed.

The joint project was funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection with €1,265,455.

Installation and trial operation of a pilot plant

In the BtX Energy GmbH sub-project, the 100 kg/day pilot plant was installed and operated on the Schleupen farm in Krefeld.

The sub-project was funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy with €634,717.

The BioH2Ref project began in 2022 with the modification of a methane reformer plant for direct use with biogas.

The plant was completed in fall 2022 and operated with natural gas for test purposes for the first time.

In spring 2023, it was put back into operation at its destination in Krefeld following the granting of planning permission and integration.

The system was optimized and modified there for two years with a large number of test series until the project goals were exceeded.

Today, the reformer plant achieves 115 % of the originally designed nominal output and, with 60 % cold gas efficiency, also more than the efficiency expected in the project.

In 2025, it is to be transferred to commercial use, for which the demonstrator filling station will be converted into a filling system for bottle bundles.
